House in Martha’s Vineyard
Chilmark, MA, USA
2010
Located near the southern tip of Martha’s Vineyard, the 2,700 sq foot residence sits atop a four and a half acre site. With the Vineyard Sound to the west, and the Atlantic ocean to the east, the location and orientation of the vacation home captures the stunning landscape of the island. The building is composed of two rectangular volumes. The upper volume shifts toward the east, forming a dramatic overhang above the entrance, while the lower volume is drawn toward the west. The second floor opens onto an expansive deck, allowing residents uninterrupted views of the breathtaking Vineyard Sound. High performance glazing wraps around the north, west, and south facades of the lower volume, contrasting the second floor’s yellow cedar exterior to create the illusion of a suspended upper volume. Formed by the integration of a hip roof and an inverted gable roof, the dramatic engagement continues the idea of two interplaying volumes.
