Peter Freeman Gallery
New York, NY, USA
2013

A ground floor and basement renovation of a landmarked building in New York City’s original arts district of SoHo, this project required meticulous re mastering of historic designs and engineering. In addition to designing for a contemporary artists’ exhibition space, the gallery includes a library, viewing room, art handling facilities, administrative offices, and kitchen. It is an example of refined restoration efforts juxtaposed against innovative spatial solutions and contemporary interior design. The bold paint colors that have been applied to the exposed pipes highlight the building’s history, while the clean white walls envelope optimum opportunities for art display. Likewise, the richly finished original wood flooring grounds the space but complements the Corinthian columns and antique finishes. A modern, rough-hewn door not only divides the space but surfaces as a fixture; dividing operation from expose.
